Pada 27 November 1980 Perbadanan Industri Berat Malaysia (HICOM) diperbadankan dengan Kementerian Kewangan. Ini menjadikan Industri berat negara semakin pesat membangun antaranya industri pembuatan kapal, industri minyak dan gas, sektor pembinaan negara dan yang menjadi kebanggaan negara ialah pada September 1985 Projek Kereta Nasional iaitu Proton dan Permotoran Motor Modenas dilancarkan.
On 27 November 1980 the Malaysian Heavy Industry Corporation (HICOM) was incorporated with the Ministry of Finance. This has led to the rapid growth of the country's heavy industry, including the shipbuilding industry, the oil and gas industry, the country's construction sector and the country's pride, in September 1985, the National Car Project, Proton and Modenas motorcycles launched.
